4 Easy Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipes – Great DIY Gift Idea (1)

Homemade sugar scrubs moisturize and exfoliate the body and are SO simple to make. My sugar body scrub recipe leaves skin feeling soft, nourished and is made with completely natural ingredients.

SUGAR SCRUB BENEFITS

Sugar Scrubs work hard to exfoliate and moisturize dry skin. Exfoliation is so important because it helps to remove dead skin from the surface, can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and pores, detoxifies and improves the overall tone of skin.

Oil in the homemade sugar scrub is more easily absorbed once skin is exfoliated, leaving your skin healthy, soft and radiant.

HOW DO YOU MAKE AN EXFOLIATING SCRUB?

It could not be any easier to make a homemade exfoliating sugar scrub. It’s a simple combination of sugar and oil – it’s all you need for glowing skin!

Exfoliating scrubs are great for the entire body, especially dry areas like feet and hands. I have a special recipe just for hands if you’re looking for an exfoliating hand scrub.

NOTE: I do not use this scrub on my face. If you’re looking for an easy facial scrub, check out this simple face scrub from Mama Instincts that also uses sugar.

WHAT IS THE BEST OIL TO USE IN A SUGAR SCRUB?

My favorite carrier oil for homemade sugar scrub is grapeseed oil. Grapeseed oil feels less greasy but is still extremely nourishing, which makes it my top pick for a DIY sugar scrub.

You should be able to pick up grapeseed oil at a natural grocery store (I got mine at Sprouts in the personal care section). Or it is, of course, available online right here.

I always like to include jojoba oil in my body product recipes since it is so nourishing and skin LOVES it, so you’ll also find jojoba in this homemade sugar scrub.

I love to add Vitamin E to my body product recipes as well for a little extra nourishment. A little goes a long way, and you can add it to all kinds of things!

I put Vitamin E in DIY cuticle oil, this DIY nail soak and it is a great addition to homemade lotion bars.

DIY SUGAR SCRUB INGREDIENTS

You can find all of the ingredients to make your own sugar scrubs on this Amazon page.

  • 1 ½ cups sugar (preferably organic)
  • ½ cup grapeseed oil (or other oil of your choice. Olive, almond and avocado also work well)
  • 1 TBS jojoba oil
  • 6 drops vitamin E
  • 15-20 drops essential oil of choice (I’ve listed my favorite combinations below)

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUB

  • Measure sugar in a mixing bowl
  • Add in grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, vitamin E and essential oils
  • I like to add the essential oils last and put right on top of the oil – I find it incorporates into the salt mixture better this way.
  • Mix until all of the sugar is coated with oil. The sugar will not be swimming in oil, just coated.
  • Store in a glass or metal container of your choice.
  • This recipe fills a single pint sized mason jar or 2 half pint jars.

HOMEMADE SUGAR SCRUB SHELF LIFE

If you’re wondering How long does sugar scrub last, I have good news for you! Since this sugar scrub recipe does not contain any water, it can last up to 6 months. I’d be surprised if it lasts that long though!

Make sure to keep it sealed in a jar with a lid to ensure it stays fresh and free of contaminants. If you keep it in your shower, store your sugar scrub away from the water stream to avoid water getting into the jar.

As long as you keep it dry, your homemade sugar scrub will stay fresh for months.
